Why Calgary Fall Clean Up and Spring Clean Up Are Essential for Healthy Lawns

Seasonal yard maintenance through Calgary fall clean up helps ensure vibrant, healthy landscapes all year round without unexpected surprises.
As the vibrant colors of summer fade and cooler temperatures settle in, Calgary fall clean up becomes a critical part of seasonal lawn care. During autumn, fallen leaves, branches, and debris begin to accumulate on lawns, potentially smothering the grass and preventing it from breathing properly. If left unattended, this organic material can encourage mould growth, attract pests, and make your yard look neglected as winter approaches. A thorough fall clean up not only maintains curb appeal but also prepares the soil and turf for the harsh winter months.Performing these tasks in autumn helps to strengthen the roots of your grass, enabling it to withstand the coming snow and ice.
Spring Clean Up in Calgary: Starting the Growing Season Right
Once winter’s grip loosens and the snow finally melts, spring clean up in Calgary becomes the next essential step for lawn care. The freezing temperatures and heavy snow can leave behind broken branches, compacted soil, and patches of dead grass that need immediate attention. A complete spring clean up breathes new life into your yard by removing winter debris and stimulating fresh growth for the coming season.
Clearing away leaves and thatch buildup allows sunlight and moisture to penetrate the soil more effectively. Aerating compacted soil encourages deeper root growth and improves drainage. Additionally, early spring is the ideal time to fertilize your lawn and lay down fresh mulch in garden beds, setting the stage for strong, consistent growth. Addressing these issues early ensures that your lawn will thrive throughout the warmer months, reducing the risk of pests and diseases later in the year.
How Calgary Fall Clean Up Prepares Your Lawn for Winter
One of the main reasons Calgary fallclean up is so important is its role in winter preparation. Many homeowners underestimate the damage that a heavy blanket of snow can inflict on an unprepared yard. Grass that’s left long or covered in layers of fallen leaves creates a breeding ground for mould and other diseases that can destroy entire sections of lawn by spring.
Raking leaves, trimming plants, and removing debris allow your yard to breathe before it goes dormant. Additionally, applying a slow-release fertilizer in the fall provides essential nutrients that strengthen root systems and give grass the stamina it needs to survive through winter’s harsh conditions. Mulching around trees and garden beds also helps regulate soil temperature and moisture levels, giving your entire landscape the best possible chance for a healthy resurgence in spring.
Benefits of Spring Clean Up in Calgary for Long-Term Lawn Health
Regular spring clean up in Calgary is one of the smartest ways to maintain your property’s appearance and long-term health. After months of freezing temperatures and snow accumulation, your lawn requires a fresh start. Removing dead vegetation, cutting back perennials, and clearing leftover fall debris create a clean slate for new growth. More importantly, spring clean up provides an opportunity to identify any winter damage early, before it turns into larger problems.
Fertilizing in early spring gives your lawn a nutritional boost, helping it recover quickly from winter dormancy. Reseeding bare patches promotes even grass coverage, while pruning shrubs and ornamental trees encourages new foliage. By tackling these tasks at the start of the growing season, you can enjoy a lush, green yard for the months to come. Additionally, proactive maintenance in spring helps reduce the workload in summer, making your ongoing lawn care more manageable.
Creating a Year-Round Lawn Care Routine with Seasonal Clean Ups
Integrating Calgary fall clean up and spring clean up in Calgary into your yearly maintenance routine is the best way to ensure your property stays healthy and attractive no matter the season. Each seasonal transition presents unique challenges for outdoor spaces, and addressing those challenges promptly prevents long-term damage. Fall clean up helps your yard recover from summer’s heat and prepares it for winter’s harsh conditions, while spring clean up revitalizes it after months of snow and freezing temperatures.
Stay Ahead with Calgary Fall Clean Up and Spring Maintenance Whether preparing for winter’s challenges or welcoming the renewal of spring, investing time and effort in Calgary fall clean up and spring clean up in Calgary pays off in every season. These essential practices protect your yard from seasonal stress, encourage healthy growth, and keep your outdoor spaces looking their best throughout the year. By making seasonal clean ups a regular part of your lawn care strategy, you’re giving your property the foundation it needs to flourish beautifully.

yk. after talking so negatively about alberta as of recent i want to share some photos i’ve taken around here because at the end of the day, alberta is not only a beautiful province, it’s also my home. so!
these are from around banff and lake louise:

these directly from lake louise, of obviously of the lake, but also pictures i’ve taken in and around the area on some nearby hikes!

these are from johnston’s canyon, one one of the most famous hikes in the area. the second two are near the lower falls, but i’ve been to the upper falls once and it’s just as beautiful. the wiggly tree is just something fun about the hike! it’s been there since my mom was a kid, and even before that…

and this is a photo i took while riding probably the most popular gondola that has the banff springs hotel near the bottom!
now for a couple from canmore:

i really only have a couple photos from canmore because i don’t go there super often, but these are a few i really like! the third one is my favourite, that bridge is super cool tbh
moving onto jasper:

jasper was hit fairly recently with a lot of really awful wildfires, and since then i haven’t actually visited… but, the last time i did go, it was absolutely beautiful. the first two are photos of a hike you take a gondola to get up to, unfortunately i couldn’t finish them due to elevation sickness, but even from where i was the view was incredible. the last photo is of spirit island, which if i remember correctly, is an important place to the stoney nakoda first nation, because of their belief of mountains representing their ancestors (i really hope i got this right)
these are from abraham lake, and probably some of my dad’s favourite photos from a trip here!

these are methane bubbles frozen in ice on the lake, which is the main attraction of going in winter! it’s freezing cold, but absolutely worth it (trust me, seeing these in real life is really awesome)
these are a little closer to my home, there’s a small hike around the elbow river my family does just about every summer!

the first is the actual hike, and the second is an inukshuk i remember seeing someone make on the hike a couple years ago! (bonus story uh one time on this hike i. may or may not have stepped in a stream of water and had to finish the rest of the hike with a wet shoe 😔)
and then for some more “city/industry focused” photos, here are a few i have of both edmonton and fort mackay!
these are some places in edmonton:

(the art gallery of alberta, and a building near the university of alberta that is literally referred to as the butterdome)
and some photos from fort mackay!

a lot of these deal with the oil sands since, yk, it’s one of the places where all the hardcore oil drilling and stuff happens. the third photo, if i remember correctly, is actually a site where they’re working to clean up all the literal toxic sludge lol. i actually think my parents worked on it! and obviously i had to include some buffalo my family saw :)
and i don’t have a lot of photos from fort mcmurry unfortunately, so i’ll ask my parents to send me some, and i’ll edit the post to add them later!
and finally, it wouldn’t be a scott alberta appreciation post if i didn’t include my home city calgary :)

inside the university of calgary, a photo of peace bridge,

a photo of eau claire mall before it was demolished, a photo of bowmont park (if i remember correctly, a photo of the reservoir i actually think looks really cool with COP in the background (a place for skiing)),

and lastly for now, the northern lights just outside my home :)
there’s so much i didn’t include here: photos from kananaskis, downtown edmonton, the saddledome and the bow building in calgary, and so much of both red deer and fort mcmurray, which have all been a part of my life growing up in alberta. as much as i have complained about it here recently, it is my home, and at the end of the day, it’s a home that i love.
#i have so many other places i would love to include… the oil sands museum in fort mac… the royal alberta museum… even the calgary stampede…#bowness park… more of banff city… two jack lake… hell even more photos of downtown calgary. which i may even have more of soon…#alberta is a beautiful province and i hope that i haven’t given my followers a bad impression of it just based on politics#i’ve lived here my whole life. figured after so much negativity it was high time for an alberta appreciation post :)#also! i would encourage you to look up some of the things i’ve mentioned but don’t have a photo of. they’re all really cool!#shut up scott

Oh boy, this is probably so irrelevant to you, but I've read the little piece you made for Babyverse about Jasper having to leave Alice and their son to go hunt and I swear I wept, thinking that's exactly how my baby brother gets everytime I leave. Literally the cutest AU ever made!!! Also, I have a weak spot for Damage Alice. May I ask for some of any of these two masterpieces?
This is absolutely not irrelevant - I'm not around small children, so I am relying entirely luck and vague memories to make any depiction of Ollie convincing, and I am SO glad that I am on the right track!
You caught me in a weak moment, so have a little of both <3
babyverse.
It’s been six fucking weeks since he’s seen them, and he’s trying to convince himself that this is another false lead, another dead-end, even as he presses his foot further on the accelerator.
He knows the old motel he’s going to - it’s been abandoned for decades, with a cracked sign caked in filth declaring it the Rose Spring. It’s a thrice condemned shit-hole, untouched because of alleged chemical leaks or something that the government don’t want to have to clean up to sell the land off. It’s irrelevant though; the Rose Spring, like all the other falling-down, forgotten motels across the country, is a regular haunt for vampires looking to avoid the sun, to meet other travellers, to pass messages back and forth.
He pulls into the motel, barely shutting off the ignition as he gets out. The back is laden with supplies, and he pauses only long enough to grab the bag that Esme has labelled with a big red cross.
The stairs are flimsy and buckle under his step - no place for a human. Half the balcony has collapsed, and at least two of the rooms have crumbled in on themselves - probably in the last storm.
Room 37 is tucked in the corner, and he doesn’t bother to knock as he throws open the door.
Ollie is sitting on the first rancid, rotting bed and his face lights up as he sees Jasper, his arms stretching out towards him. He’s wearing filthy, mismatched clothing that aren’t his, and is sucking on a pacifier again, and for some reason that’s more upsetting than anything else to Jasper - he was just beginning to give it up before everything happened. And now it’s back.
Maria is seated on the bed with Ollie, looking equally as filthy and surprisingly solemn.
“You made it faster than I anticipated,” she says, standing up and motioning to Ollie as the bed tilts slightly without her weight. “He’ll be hungry, but he’s unharmed.”
Ollie makes a whining noise as soon as he’s in Jasper’s arms; a reassuring weight, but Ollie is about to start crying.
“Where’s Alice?” He demands, rubbing his son’s back and hoping they can get out of here, and back north tonight; somewhere they can clean up and talk and he can make sure that they’re okay.
Maria looks grimmer and motions for him to follow her out the door and into the next room.
Ollie gets agitated, straining towards Alice the second they set foot in the second room.
The scent of blood saturates the air.
Alice is lying on the bed, unconscious. There’s an angry wound on her head, and bother her arms. Some rough bandages have been wrapped around her leg, and it’s obvious that someone - perhaps Maria - tried to clean her up.
“Alice?” His alarm is evident in his voice, and he almost hands Ollie off to Maria to go to her side before his brain clicks back into place. “Alice, can you hear me?”
Ollie’s reaching more and his whimpers are turning to wails as Alice doesn’t flinch.
“For god’s sake, give me the child, and deal with your mate,” Maria says, almost crossing. “I didn’t eat him before, I’m not going to eat him now.”
damaged alice.
The race to the ballet studio is the longest journey of his life.
Alice can’t defend herself. She’s never fought in her life. When Maria came to Calgary, Alice had been carefully protected by Esme and Emmett.
He’s never run faster in his life.
The scene that he finds in the ballet studio is one that fills him with anger and terror, and his first instinct is to get Alice out.
Not Bella bleeding out on the floor and screaming (oh god, he knows that scream) with an extremely broken leg.
Or to destroy James, with his joker-smile.
Alice is standing over Bella, blood on her face and dress and hands, and she’s getting upset about it, a thin cry coming out of her mouth as she stares down at her maybe-future-best-friend’s blood smelling so tempting…
But when James laughingly steps forward towards Bella, Alice growls protectively.
He swoops in, barely pausing as he grabs Alice and gets her out of James’ reach, smoothing her hair as he tries to look her in the eyes; but Alice’s eyes dart, never meeting his. Not a surprise that today would become a bad one, that Alice can’t communicate right now.
(James was alone with her for too long; he hates himself for that. He’s terrified she’s been hurt in some way, that the damage is worse than being slathered in her maybe-friend’s blood. )
“Are you okay?”
As soon as the words are out, James slams into him from nowhere, and he can’t worry about Alice or Bella in that moment.
But all he can hear are Alice’s soft cries from where she’s standing in the corner.
#my fic: damaged alice#my fic: hybrid baby-verse#babyverse alice will recover#damaged alice has a little more trauma first#didn't mean for both of these to be jasper-rescue snippets#maria is a bamf#and she's not going to kill jasper's 'wife' and kid#that's beyond tacky and completely inefficient and just not necessary#why harm them when helping them might get you a Future Favour?#i'll put a post up last but i'm not doing any more snippets for a hot minute so that I can get on top of ficmas and all my wips#i'll go through the existing ones that I've got in my ask box#but anything else will be politely set aside until I've got the priority stuff done

Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary: Transforming Outdoor Spaces with Seasonal Care
As winter fades and temperatures rise, homeowners begin turning their attention to restoring their outdoor spaces. A spring yard clean up in Calgary is more than just seasonal tidying—it's a crucial step in preserving the health and appearance of your lawn and garden. This transition period brings an opportunity to clear debris, assess winter damage, and prep your landscape for months of growth. Alongside this, comprehensive spring clean ups in Calgary ensure every corner of your property—from flower beds to fence lines—is ready to flourish.
The Importance of a Thorough Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
After months of snow cover and cold winds, your yard likely holds a mix of matted leaves, broken branches, and dead grass. A spring yard clean up in Calgary involves removing this debris to prevent suffocation of the soil and improve water absorption. When organic waste lingers, it can harbour pests and diseases that threaten your landscape's health. Cleaning early in the season not only restores order to your yard but sets a strong foundation for lawn care, planting, and outdoor enjoyment. In Calgary’s fluctuating climate, timing this clean-up correctly can make a noticeable difference in how well your yard thrives.
Why Spring Clean Ups in Calgary Require Strategic Planning
Many homeowners underestimate the complexity involved in effective spring clean ups in Calgary. It's not simply a matter of raking leaves and mowing grass. The process includes soil testing, fertilising, aerating, trimming shrubs, and even planning new plantings. Calgary’s unique climate, with its late frosts and chinooks, means you must plan your cleanup around unpredictable conditions. A well-planned spring clean up ensures your efforts aren’t undone by a sudden temperature drop or unexpected snowfall. It also allows you to spot drainage issues, pests, or damage that could lead to expensive repairs later in the season.
Preparing Your Lawn Through a Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
Grass often suffers from snow mould and compacted soil after the winter season. A spring yard clean up in Calgary is the best time to address these issues head-on. Start with dethatching and aerating your lawn to allow nutrients and oxygen to penetrate the soil. Follow this with an early application of a slow-release fertiliser to jump-start growth. Reseeding thin or bare patches can encourage a lush, green carpet throughout summer. Proper preparation in spring saves time and money on maintenance later and keeps your lawn resilient during Calgary’s hot, dry periods.
Spring Clean Ups in Calgary: Refreshing Your Garden Beds
Garden beds require special attention after winter dormancy. During spring clean ups in Calgary, remove any dead annuals, prune back perennials, and clear mulch that may have compacted or disintegrated. This opens up space for fresh planting and revitalises the soil. Early weeding is essential—removing weeds before they seed prevents widespread growth and protects your flowers and vegetables. It’s also a good time to amend the soil with compost or organic fertilisers, enriching it before planting new crops or ornamentals. A clean, well-prepped garden bed becomes the heart of your yard’s visual appeal and productivity.
Dealing with Leaf Litter and Debris in a Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
One of the most labour-intensive aspects of a spring yard clean up in Calgary is managing leaf litter, branches, and leftover winter waste. Clearing these materials improves airflow and light penetration across your lawn and garden. Removing wet, decomposing leaves reduces the risk of mould and helps discourage slugs and other pests from settling in. This is also the time to assess tree health—look for broken limbs or signs of disease that may have gone unnoticed during the winter. A clean, debris-free yard contributes to both safety and aesthetics, especially in areas where children or pets play.
Spring Clean Ups in Calgary Help Restore Hardscaping
The benefits of spring clean ups in Calgary extend beyond green spaces. Hardscaping elements like patios, pathways, fences, and decks often take a beating during winter. Dirt, algae, and salt residue can build up, dulling the surface and causing potential damage. Spring is the ideal time to power wash these areas, reseal wooden surfaces, and repair cracks or loose tiles. Paying attention to these structural elements during a clean up enhances your entire yard’s appearance and prepares it for entertaining or outdoor relaxation throughout the warmer months.
Timing and Weather Considerations for a Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
Weather in Calgary can be unpredictable, making the timing of your spring yard clean up in Calgary especially critical. Starting too early might mean working with soggy soil, leading to compaction and plant damage. Too late, and you risk letting weeds take over or missing the optimal planting window. The best time usually falls between late April and mid-May, depending on the year’s thaw. Watch for consistent temperatures above freezing and dry ground conditions before beginning. Monitoring long-term forecasts can help you plan a clean upthat’s both effective and sustainable.
Eco-Friendly Spring Clean Ups in Calgary Make a Difference
Environmentally conscious homeowners are turning toward greener methods during spring clean ups in Calgary. Instead of sending yard waste to landfills, composting leaves and clippings recycles nutrients back into the soil. Choosing electric lawn tools over gas-powered ones helps reduce emissions. Avoiding chemical fertilisers and opting for organic treatments improves soil health and reduces runoff pollution. These eco-friendly efforts align with Calgary’s growing sustainability goals while still delivering a beautiful, functional outdoor space. Being thoughtful about your cleanup methods not only benefits your property but also contributes to a healthier local ecosystem.
The Long-Term Benefits of a Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
While a spring yard clean up in Calgary may seem like a temporary seasonal task, its benefits can be long-lasting. A thorough spring cleanup leads to fewer pest problems, healthier plant growth, and less need for interventions later in the year. It also boosts property value by maintaining curb appeal and showcasing your home’s outdoor areas. In essence, a clean yard at the start of spring becomes the cornerstone for a successful gardening and landscaping season. It supports the overall harmony of your environment and lets you enjoy your space to the fullest.
Conclusion
A proper spring yard clean up in Calgary is more than seasonal maintenance—it’s an essential ritual for renewing and protecting your outdoor spaces. From cleaning garden beds and reviving lawns to preparing patios and planning ahead, spring clean ups in Calgary shape the foundation of a healthy, vibrant yard. Whether you're seeking to beautify your surroundings or improve long-term landscape resilience, spring cleanup is the first and most important step of the season.

How Often Should You Get Your Car Detailed in Calgary?

If you take pride in your vehicle, keeping it clean and well-maintained is likely a top priority. But when it comes to professional detailing, how often is too often? And how long should you wait before booking your next session? In a city like Calgary, where unpredictable weather and road conditions can take a toll on your car, finding the right detailing schedule is essential.
The Calgary Climate and Your Car
Calgary’s unique climate plays a significant role in determining how frequently you should get your car detailed. With cold, snowy winters and dry, dusty summers, your vehicle is constantly exposed to elements that can damage its paint, upholstery, and undercarriage. Road salt in the winter can lead to rust, while summer dust and pollen can accumulate quickly inside and out.
Because of these factors, Calgary drivers often need more frequent detailing than those in milder climates. But exactly how often should you book an appointment?
How Often Should You Detail Your Car?
The ideal detailing schedule depends on several factors, including how often you drive, where you park, and your personal standards for cleanliness. However, for most Calgary drivers, a professional detailing session every three to four months is a good rule of thumb. This means a quarterly detailing routine—once in winter, spring, summer, and fall—will keep your car in top shape year-round.
If you drive daily, park outside, or have kids or pets, you may need car detail calgary more frequently, possibly every six to eight weeks. On the other hand, if you rarely use your vehicle and store it in a garage, you might get away with detailing it just twice a year.
Winter Car Detailing: A Must for Calgary Drivers
Winter in Calgary is especially harsh on vehicles. The constant exposure to snow, slush, and road salt can cause significant damage over time. Salt residue can corrode your car’s paint and undercarriage, while melted snow can seep into your interior, leading to mold and unpleasant odors.
Because of this, many experts recommend a deep winter detailing session in early December or January, focusing on salt removal, undercarriage cleaning, and interior protection. Applying a high-quality wax or ceramic coating during this time can also help protect your car’s paint from further damage.
Spring Cleaning for Your Vehicle
After months of battling the winter elements, your car deserves a fresh start in the spring. A thorough spring detailing in March or April will help remove built-up grime, clean out the interior, and prepare your vehicle for warmer months ahead. This is also a great time to shampoo carpets and seats to remove any salt stains that may have settled in over the winter.
Summer Car Detailing: Keeping Dust and Pollen Away
While summer may seem like an easier time for your car, the dry Calgary climate can lead to dust buildup, both inside and out. Tree pollen, bird droppings, and bug splatter can also cause paint damage if left untreated. A mid-summer detailing session in June or July can help keep your vehicle looking fresh while protecting it from the sun’s UV rays. Many detailers offer ceramic coatings or paint sealants that provide extra protection against sun damage and oxidation.
Fall Detailing: Preparing for Another Harsh Winter
Before the snow and ice return, a fall detailing session in September or October is a smart investment. This is the time to apply a durable wax or sealant that will help your car’s exterior withstand winter conditions. Fall detailing should also include an interior deep clean, as dirt and dust collected over the summer can quickly turn into a mess once wet boots and heavy coats come into play.
DIY Maintenance Between Professional Detailing
While professional detailing every three to four months is recommended, regular at-home maintenance can help keep your car in top condition between appointments. Washing your car every two weeks and vacuuming the interior at least once a month will prevent excessive buildup of dirt and debris. If you have leather seats, applying a conditioner every two to three months will keep them soft and prevent cracking.
The Bottom Line
In Calgary, where weather extremes are part of everyday life, getting your car detailed regularly is not just about aesthetics—it’s about preserving your vehicle’s value and longevity. A seasonal detailing schedule, combined with regular maintenance, will ensure your car stays clean, protected, and looking its best no matter the time of year.
If you’re unsure about the best detailing routine for your specific needs, speaking with a local detailing professional can help you determine the ideal frequency and services for your car. After all, a well-maintained vehicle is more enjoyable to drive—and worth more when it’s time to sell or trade in.

I’m a bit of a diva, so you know, this was right up my alley.
Let me set the scene for you. Imagine me, peeking out from behind the front door, curious yet excited as the grooming van pulled in. No hassle, no barking at strangers in the grooming salon (okay, a little to say hi), just a one-on-one pampering session with my new human friend who knows how to bring out my best curls and clean paws.
First, they gave me a gentle bath with dog-safe shampoo that smelled like a spring meadow or maybe like those parks I love to run around. Then, there was the brushing. Oh boy, I had no idea my coat could feel so smooth and fluffy. And get this: no tangles, no fuss! I mean, they got my fur to shine brighter than the sunshine on our walks. I didn’t even miss a beat as they trimmed my nails (usually the most dreaded part) because they made it quick and, dare I say, kind of relaxing. All the while, I got some amazing ear rubs.
I have to admit, before this grooming session, I thought "adventure" meant hiking up trails or jumping into the river for a splash. It turns out that adventures can also mean feeling your best and turning into the best version of yourself. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to be a squeaky-clean adventurer when you’re ready to chase the next squirrel or conquer the next mountain?
So, my humans and I highly recommend trying mobile pet grooming in Calgary if you want a stress-free, super relaxing way to stay squeaky clean. If you’re curious about which amazing groomers offer these services, you can check out this pawsome list my human put together. They’re some of the best at making pups like me look and feel ready for any adventure life throws at us!
That’s all for now, friends! Time to go roll around in something interesting... I mean, time to stay nice and clean, right? ☺️ Woof!
Until next time, keep those tails wagging and those paws adventuring, Gracie the Groomed Explorer 🐾

Essential Grass Care in Calgary: Preparing Your Lawn for a Healthy Spring

Maintaining a beautiful lawn is a point of pride for many homeowners, but achieving that lush, green appearance requires more than just occasional mowing. Proper grass care in Calgary involves a series of essential steps designed to promote healthy growth, prevent weeds, and enhance the overall look of your outdoor space. Calgary’s unique climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, presents specific challenges when it comes to keeping grass healthy and vibrant.
Getting Started with Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
One of the most critical steps in preparing your lawn for the growing season is conducting a thorough spring yard clean up in Calgary. Winter often leaves behind debris such as fallen branches, dead leaves, and compacted soil, which can hinder new growth if not addressed properly. Removing this buildup clears the way for sunlight and air to reach the grass, stimulating healthy growth as temperatures begin to rise.
A proper spring yard cleanup includes raking dead grass, aerating the soil, and trimming overgrown shrubs or trees that might block light from reaching your lawn. Aeration is particularly important in Calgary’s clay-heavy soil, as it allows water and nutrients to penetrate deep into the roots.
How Calgary Yard Cleanup Boosts Lawn Health and Appearance
While homeowners often focus on mowing as part of regular lawn care, Calgary yard cleanup plays a significant role in the long-term health of the grass. Yard cleanup isn’t just about making things look neat—it’s about removing the obstacles that prevent your lawn from reaching its full potential. Thatch buildup, for example, can suffocate your lawn by preventing moisture from reaching the soil. By clearing away thatch and debris, you help create the ideal conditions for healthy root development.
Additionally, Calgary’s weather patterns can lead to compacted soil, especially in areas that experienced heavy snow or foot traffic during the winter. Compacted soil restricts airflow and reduces the effectiveness of watering. A thorough yard cleanup that includes aeration helps combat these issues, promoting stronger, deeper roots. The result is a lawn that not only looks greener but also feels softer underfoot and stays resilient during the dry spells that are common in Calgary’s summer months.
Combining Grass Care in Calgary with Effective Weed Prevention
No lawn care routine is complete without addressing the challenge of weeds, which can quickly take over even well-maintained grass. Effective grass care in Calgary requires proactive weed prevention, particularly in the early stages of spring. Removing weeds by hand during your spring yard cleanup helps prevent them from spreading, while pre-emergent treatments can stop new weed seeds from germinating before they become a problem.
Thick, healthy grass is the best defense against weeds, as it competes more effectively for water, sunlight, and nutrients. By focusing on fertilization and proper mowing techniques, homeowners can encourage denser grass growth, naturally reducing the space available for weeds to thrive. Regular yard cleanup, combined with targeted weed prevention efforts, ensures that your lawn remains both healthy and visually appealing throughout the season.
Why Calgary Yard Cleanup Sets the Stage for a Beautiful Summer Lawn
Investing in a complete Calgary yard cleanup early in the season pays off when summer arrives. Neglected lawns often struggle during the hot months, as weak or patchy areas become more noticeable and harder to repair. A spring cleanup addresses problems before they escalate, giving your lawn a head start for the growing season. By eliminating debris, enhancing soil quality, and promoting nutrient absorption, your grass becomes stronger, greener, and more resistant to seasonal stresses.
Moreover, a tidy, well-maintained yard increases the overall enjoyment of outdoor spaces, whether you’re hosting family barbecues, playing with pets, or simply relaxing in the sunshine. The effort you put into early-season cleanup ensures that your lawn remains a source of pride and comfort during the summer months when outdoor living is at its peak in Calgary.
Final Thoughts on Grass Care and Spring Yard Clean Up in Calgary
For homeowners seeking a vibrant and healthy lawn, combining dedicated grass care in Calgary with a thorough spring yard clean up in Calgary is the key to success. These foundational tasks prepare your lawn to thrive throughout the growing season, providing the nourishment and structure it needs to resist weeds, withstand weather fluctuations, and maintain its lush appearance.
By making spring cleanup an annual routine, and following up with consistent mowing, fertilization, and watering, you create the conditions for a beautiful outdoor space that complements your home. With Calgary’s challenging climate, proactive lawn care gives you the best chance to enjoy a thriving, green lawn all season long.

Black Knot Treatment in Calgary: Simple Steps to Keep Your Trees Healthy
Black Knot is a common fungal disease that can seriously harm trees, especially cherry and plum trees. This disease shows up as ugly, black swellings on branches, which can weaken and even kill the trees if not treated. Black Knot Treatment in Calgary is important for anyone who wants to keep their trees healthy and their yards looking good. In this article, we’ll talk about how you can treat and prevent Black Knot disease, focusing on easy and natural methods.
What is Black Knot Disease?
Black Knot is a disease caused by a fungus called Apiosporina morose. It mainly affects trees in the Prunes family, like cherry and plum trees. The disease appears as hard, black lumps or "knots" on the branches. These knots can choke the branches, eventually killing them and making the whole tree unhealthy. If you don’t treat Black Knot, it can spread quickly, especially in areas where many trees are close together. That’s why Black Knot Treatment in Calgary is so important for homeowners and anyone who takes care of trees.
How to Treat Black Knot in Calgary
The best way to deal with Black Knot is to catch it early. By checking your trees regularly, especially in late fall or early spring, you can spot the signs of Black Knot before it gets too bad. Once you see the signs, you need to act fast to stop the disease from spreading.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to treat Black Knot is by pruning the affected branches. You should cut off the branches at least 4 to 6 inches below the black knot to make sure all the infected parts are removed. It’s very important to clean your pruning tools after each cut to avoid spreading the fungus to other parts of the tree. After pruning, you should destroy the infected branches, usually by burning them, because the fungus can survive on cut branches and keep spreading.
If the Black Knot infection is really bad, you might need to call in professionals. Experts who specialize in Black Knot Treatment in Calgary know exactly how to handle the disease and can use special tools and methods to treat it. They might also suggest preventive measures like applying fungicides, which can help in areas where trees are at high risk of infection.
Organic Pest Control in Calgary: A Natural Way to Protect Your Trees
Besides treating Black Knot directly, taking good care of your trees in general can help prevent diseases. Using Organic pest control Calgary is a great way to keep your trees and garden healthy without using harmful chemicals.
Organic pest control involves using natural methods to protect your trees. This might include introducing insects that naturally eat harmful pests, using organic compost to make the soil healthier, and watering and fertilizing your trees properly. By keeping your trees strong and healthy, they’ll be better able to resist diseases like Black Knot.

Perspective flip for Marriage Bets- what is Leon thinking when he picks Matthew up from the airport in Spain and in the cab on the way to the airport? That scene has so much! That scene is so much. I held my breath the entire time.
Leon can't remember the last time he felt this nervous.
It's been a while, certainly. Maybe not since the NHL awards a few years back, irrationally certain that the minute he had to give a speech -- if he won, that is; if he did have to give a speech -- he'd open his mouth and no one would understand him. Most of the time, he can work his way past any anxieties, can be sure that in the end, things will work out. He's a confident guy.
(Smug, he can hear Kim saying. An asshole, according to Davo or Zach or Tyson. But what do they know?)
Doesn't explain why the whole flight here, he stared out the window, chewing his lip, waiting for his stomach to settle long after they hit cruising altitude.
He tried telling himself that it can't be that bad. So maybe Matthew won't come. Maybe this offer was a mistake. Maybe things won't work out. If they don't, it can't feel as bad as how he felt back in the spring.
The day after they'd lost Game 1, the day after he'd blown Matthew off, he'd known he'd fucked things up. He'd woken up, rolled over in his Calgary hotel bed and checked his phone. As soon as he read his texts, it hit him, regret churning his stomach along with the lingering bitterness of the loss. It wasn't the first time something he's done in the heat in the moment has come back to bite him, but it may have been the worst.
He'd tried to fix it, approaching Matthew before the game. Texting him after. He'd wanted to explain himself. To say that even if he resented Matthew winning, even if he couldn't take Matthew's taunts and chirps right that second, it didn't mean he had wanted Matthew to leave him alone for good. That every day they went without talking felt like he'd missed a step in the stairs, like he'd been yanked off-balance. That he hadn't known how much he'd relied on hearing from Matthew until he fucked it up. That he missed Matthew -- not just the kissing, not just the sex, but his needling and his jokes and his inability to keep quiet for more than a minute.
Not that it had worked.
If the Calgary series had been bad, the series against Colorado had been worse. Leon had tried to concentrate on the hockey, but in between the shooting pain that went up his right leg every time it bore weight and the noted silence of his phone, it was hard to keep it together.
Then they got swept, and Leon didn't have to keep it together. All he had to do was say some bullshit to the media once they cleaned out, start up his rehab regimen, and figure out how on earth he can possibly make things right. Get some semblance of what they had been doing back.
And, for reasons Leon doesn't know and can't help feeling hopeful about, Matthew decided it was worth a try.
So. Here Leon is, waiting in the Malaga airport, trying not to crawl out of his skin as the arrivals board helpfully informs him that Matthew's flight landed eighteen minutes ago.
He scans the crowd. Checks the board again. Pulls out his phone. Rests his phone against his thigh. Scrubs at his beard, newly -- optimistically -- trimmed. Pulls out his phone again. Stares unseeingly at his home screen. There's a text from Kim, asking if his friend has shown up yet. He wishes he'd never told her anything.
"Leon?"
At first, Leon thinks he's imagined it. But he looks up, and there Matthew is. Tanned, smiling slightly; looking right at Leon as he weaves through the crowd.
A fist squeezes inside Leon's chest, clenching down until his breath catches. His pulse is ringing in his ears, the way it had when Matthew had texted him, im in; the way it had when Matthew had picked up the phone and said Leon's name for the first time in weeks.
Contrary to what his friends or his sister might say, Leon isn't stupid. Before, maybe he could have lied to himself, called it attraction or interest or even opportunism, told himself that it didn't mean a thing. Not now, though. Not when his heart is flipping over somewhere around his throat, just at the sight of Matthew a few meters away. There's no lying about this.
So he might be in love with Matthew Tkachuk. Well, that's -- he can figure out how to deal with that later. First, they need to get a taxi.
"Hey," Leon says. "You got everything?"
Matthew nods back, hoisting his bag a little higher. "Yeah. Good to go."
"Good," Leon replies. "We'll have to get a taxi. Come on, this way." He turns and heads for the doors, hoping his ears aren't too red. Matthew had looked pleased to see him, but what kind of pleased? Leon knows he should keep his expectations low, but it's hard to keep from hoping now that Matthew is here, really here.
He can't help glancing over his shoulder, just to check. Feels an embarrassing swoop of relief to find Matthew a step behind him.
In the backseat of the taxi, there's perhaps half a meter of space between them. For ten minutes, that half a meter is charged, crackling. Leon wants to reach across. He can't help thinking that if he touches Matthew, or if Matthew touches him, it's proof. Proof that they're here, proof that they want the same thing.
Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Matthew's hand fall into the middle of the seat. An opening.
Leon drops his own hand. Not quite close enough. He can feel the pull, a magnetic attraction growing stronger and stronger. The gap between them is only a centimeter wide.
On the next turn, Matthew slides his fingers until they cover Leon's own.
Leon inhales sharply. He almost feels dizzy. Here, now, is his proof. This can't just be a joke to Matthew. This can't just be a whim. Not with Matthew's fingers resting against Leon's hand. Not with his touch burning Leon's skin. Leon knows, is certain, that Matthew wants this -- wants Leon -- as badly as Leon wants him in return.
It's thirty minutes until they reach Marbella. Thirty minutes until Leon can push Matthew down onto the bed with white sheets, until he can watch the sun warm Matthew's skin and kiss the smile off his face, until he can show Matthew all the ways he's thought about him since May.
It might be the longest half hour of Leon's life.

Here With Me Part 21 || Taylor Makar
Author’s Note: Taylor heads home for spring break and he and Kelsey hit another bump in the road because of it. FC: Marina Laswick (@marooshk on instagram).
Warnings: cursing, anxiety // Word Count: 4,748
~~~~
Twenty
With Taylor’s season now officially over, Laura and Gary had no reason to stick around in Amherst. But not wanting their goodbye to Kelsey to be a wave during the quick exchange of the room key before Taylor and Kelsey had headed off to class Thursday morning, they invited Kelsey to join them at the arcade at the mall Thursday evening for a bit more casual of a setting since they were taking Taylor shopping Thursday afternoon anyway.
Though Kelsey couldn’t stick around too long because she had promised to do some alterations for her roommate before they left for spring break, she played a few games with and against Taylor and his parents. She also learned from her boyfriend that he was going to go home to Calgary for spring break since he didn’t have hockey anymore and that he and his roommates were doing something Friday evening for T’s and Mercs’ birthdays.
In a way, Kelsey was glad she had other plans for the evening because she couldn’t help but be disappointed which she knew would be hard to hide. She’d had so many plans for his birthday in her head but now he wasn’t even going to be here. And not only was he leaving but the one night he was going to be here before then, he was going to spend with his roommates.
She knew it was selfish and he should see his family and spend time with his friends too but she couldn’t help but feel like he really hadn’t spent much time alone with her lately and she missed it. If his love language was physical touch, hers was quality time and even if they’d had the time part of that, the quality certainly had been missing.
Instead, she kept her expression neutral until after she had said goodbye to his parents and said goodnight to Taylor and slipped back into her car. It was only then that she let her body language slump because this really kind of sucked. It was definitely a night to pop open a bottle of wine while she sewed her roommates clothes.
****
Taylor: We’re just going to hang out at the apartment tonight with some people, come over?
Kelsey: Okay.
****
On one hand, Kelsey was relieved that she’d get to see Taylor before he left for break, but on the other now she was going to have to share him with even more people and she was not looking forward to that at all.
Arriving at Taylor’s apartment around seven, Kelsey found it full of not just the roommates but a few other friends and teammates. The music wasn’t overly loud but it was clear a get together was happening.
“T! Kels is here.” Mikey called out upon spotting her.
Within a moment, Taylor was popping around the corner and pulling her into a hug kissing her softly.
“There’s my girl.” He declared clearly already having had at least one drink if the shitty taste of beer on his tongue was any indication.
“Yo T where’d you go!” Someone called and though Taylor hesitated for a moment, Kelsey urged him off with a soft ‘go’ before making her way into the kitchen.
Watching Taylor play some form of beer pong or whatever it was, Kelsey moved to put drinks in the fridge so they were cold and refilled the bins of snacks before cleaning up the kitchen.
When the game was over he wandered to drape himself over her again, but she maybe had his attention for five minutes before he was engaged in conversation with someone else and Kelsey dipped out of his grasp to wander around the apartment grabbing empty bottles to put in the trash.
“Hey Kels…” Mikey stated softly upon her reentry to the kitchen. “You okay?”
“Fine.” She replied, her fake smile on display. If he noticed her lie, he didn’t say anything and just nodded, grabbing another drink before leaving her in the kitchen to watch as the small party went on around her.
Honestly she wasn’t sure why Taylor had even invited her. She was literally the only girl here and while she knew his roommates it wasn’t like she was friends with them or any of the other guys on the team. And besides a single kiss and five minutes worth of clinging it was like she wasn’t even there.
And like she couldn’t fault him for having fun but she definitely wasn’t even if she usually loved parties like this.
It was probably 8:45 when she slipped into the bathroom to let out a sigh and just have a few minutes of quiet, not leaving until there was a knock on the door with someone wanting to use the bathroom.
Doing another round of cleaning and restocking, Kelsey ended up sitting on Taylor’s lap for a few minutes until he was dragged into another party game.
Shortly before eleven, Kelsey decided she’d had enough and moved to find Taylor, wrapping her arms around his shoulders while he played cards.
“Hey T. I’m gonna go. Happy Birthday. Let me know when you get to Calgary.” She whispered softly in his ear before kissing his cheek and moving to head out. He didn’t stop her, barely even acknowledged hearing her and that told Kelsey everything she needed to know about this week.
As much as she had thought she was a priority in his life, she wasn’t.
Driving back to her apartment, Kelsey threw everything she wanted to take home for break into bags and then unceremoniously tossed them into the backseat before making the drive back to her parents house, arriving just after midnight.
Grateful that they were in Arizona for a long weekend for a conference, she made her way up to her room after locking up and just fell into bed, sobbing into her pillow.
*****
With Taylor due to get into town in the afternoon, Laura and Gary were finishing their own unpacking and tidying up the house while finally catching up with their older son beyond the brief check ins they’d had throughout the week.
“You guys were particularly hard to get ahold of this week.” Cale commented.
“Eh you know, taking Taylor shopping, the game and trip to and from Boston, having dinner with and getting to know Kelsey.” Gary listed while unloading the dishwasher.
For nearly five minutes, Cale went on a ramble about the Costco they’d go to in Massachusetts vs the one in Denver before he stopped suddenly.
“Wait. Who the fuck is Kelsey?” He questioned, like he’d never heard the name before in his life. Laura’s eyes went wide but Gary just rolled with it, continuing his conversation with his son.
“She’s Tay’s girlfriend. Crazy smart, sweet, and a firecracker.” Gary declared.
“T has a girlfriend?!?! Since when???”
“January or so.” Gary replied before regaling Cale with how Amherst and the surrounding area had changed in the few years since he’d been there.
****
It wasn’t until Taylor was on his flight to Calgary that he really had time to sit and think. He’d listened to music while waiting for his flight just like normal until a song came on that he’d added after hearing it play in Kelsey’s car. Though he’d had to focus on boarding, now that he was situated he couldn’t get Kelsey out of his mind.
She’d left last night before it was even really late. She’d dropped a kiss to his cheek, wished him a happy birthday, and then was gone. She didn’t even say I love you.
And when he’d texted her that he was boarding and that he loves her she’d left him on read.
Fuck.
Taylor rubbed his face before starting to replay last night in his mind to figure out how he had fucked things up.
He’d greeted her when she arrived and then she’d sent him to go finish his game. Admittedly one game had turned into a couple before he’d gone looking for her and it hadn’t been long with her in his arms before Kenny was talking to him about a whole range of things.
Fuck, he’d kind of abandoned and ignored her hadn’t he?
Opening up the notepad on his phone since he couldn’t send a text right now, Taylor tried to figure out how to apologize to Kelsey for being an idiot.
Kels. I’m sorry for last night. It was pretty fucking shitty of me to abandon you and not include you more. Can’t say I blame you for leaving. I’m so sorry. I’ll make it up to you when I get back.
Mentally cursing himself again, Taylor switched back to his music just trying to distract himself for the rest of his flight.
When his flight landed, Taylor gathered up his carry-on and made his way through the airport to the gate he was usually picked up at.
As soon as he turned airplane mode off his phone almost exploded with missed calls, voicemails, and texts from his brother. Eyes going wide he shoved his phone in his pocket again until the buzzing stopped. Then he pulled it out to send off his apology text to Kelsey and notify her he was safe in Calgary before resuming his quest to meet his ride.
Finding his cousin Lucas’ vehicle didn’t take too long and Taylor tossed his bag into the back before climbing into the passenger seat, thanking him for picking him up.
As Lucas caught him up on some family gossip, Taylor checked his phone just to see why Cale blew him up.
Cale: WHAT THE FUCK DUDE
Cale: You have a girlfriend???
Cale: Since January???
Cale: And I found out from dad!
Cale: Because he and mom fucking met her!
Cale: You gotta be fucking kidding me.
Cale: Don’t think you’re gonna get to ignore me about this.
Cale: Even if you are on a cross country flight right now.
Cale: I can’t believe you have a girlfriend and didn’t tell me for two fucking months.
Cale: Technically still haven’t told me. Dad did.
Cale: You fucking suck.
Cale: But congrats I guess.
Cale: Mom and dad seemed to like her.
Cale: Fuck you Taylor. Mark knew?
Cale: Way too pretty for you T.
Cale: But you’re kinda cute together I guess.
Taylor was sure that the voicemails contained similar vibes and he closed the thread checking to see if Kelsey had responded to him yet. Nothing.
Closing his eyes, Taylor tried to focus on the family dinner Lucas was telling him he was being dragged to since he was back in town.
Thankfully it was easy to lose himself in the love of his family and the end of Cale’s game and not think about how his phone was still silent.
Eventually though it buzzed once and Taylor excused himself from the room for a moment before checking it.
Kelsey: apology accepted.
That was it. Kelsey was only a brief texter if she was in a hurry or upset so the fact that she didn’t send more left a sinking feeling in his gut. But again he tried not to dwell and returned to his family centering the conversations on them and not on him.
By the time he got home with his parents he was torn between not wanting to be alone and just wanting to bury himself under the covers. Deciding for a bit of both he said goodnight to his parents and then headed to his room to call Cale so that his brother wouldn't kill him for ignoring him.
Thankfully he was able to steer Cale to talk about hockey and things in Denver and not Kelsey and how he had apparently fucked things up.
By the time he got Cale off the phone Taylor was just jetlagged and exhausted enough that he might be able to get a few hours of fitful sleep.
Eventually Taylor woke up and went for a long run before he showered and got ready to go hang out with his cousins again. The busier he was the easier it was to not think about Kelsey though he did try to call her midday with no answer leaving him starting to question everything. Again he stalled as long as he could going home before finally resigning himself to crawling into bed alone.
Around ten o’clock birthday messages started rolling in from people he knew on the east coast where it was already basically his birthday.
For some reason he wasn’t expecting his phone to light up with a series of texts from Kelsey at 10:01 pm, yet it did.
Kelsey: It took 21.60273973 revolutions of the sun from when you were born until we met. In that time you became the well-mannered, lighthearted, intelligent, funny, kind, respectful, persevering, passionate, gentle, and loving man that knocked me off my feet and kept me steady all at the same time. You remind me every day that while there are times to be serious, life isn’t worth living without a little fun and laughter too. Though we’ve only known each other for four-tenths a revolution of the sun, I can’t wait to see what the next 21+ will bring.
Kelsey: All of that to say Happy Birthday T. I wish I were there to celebrate with you in person especially since your present isn’t exactly mailable but I hope you have the best day and I love you.
Kelsey: Hopefully these will suffice in the meantime.
As he read over his girlfriend’s sweet messages his phone buzzed again with a handful of photos. Photos of his girlfriend in a burgundy lace lingerie set. Immediately his dick responded because Kelsey was so fucking beautiful. Scrolling back up to read her texts, Taylor found himself hoping that maybe he had misread her energy the past few days and things really were fine.
Then he opened one of the photos to take a closer look and his dick immediately softened.
It wasn’t that she didn’t look gorgeous because she absolutely did. But as Taylor looked closer at her face, it was plain as day that the smile she was wearing didn’t reach her eyes. Despite having clearly done her hair and makeup before taking the photos, her gaze into the camera looked hollow. It looked like taking the photos was the last thing she wanted to do. It was an act. And there was no bigger turn off in the world than that.
Tossing his phone down on the bed, Taylor threw his pillow across the room before getting up and crossing the hall to the bathroom. Starting up a cold shower, Taylor stripped and stepped under the spray. He didn’t know what to believe because those messages said one thing while the pictures said another. The girl in those pictures…that wasn’t his girlfriend.
He couldn’t help but wonder if she even wanted to do this anymore.
As tears of frustration spilled from his eyes Taylor leaned against the shower wall. How had things gotten so messed up when a week ago they had said I love you for the first time. Had meeting his parents been too much for her to handle? Had he fucked up in some other way? Was she still pissed about Friday after saying she accepted his apology? Taylor just didn’t understand.
When chills finally overtook his body, Taylor wiped at his eyes and climbed out, drying off and redressing before returning to his room to gather the pillow from the floor and crawl under the blankets.
Knocking his phone, Taylor reached for it before it hit the floor and looked at the lock screen picture of he and Kelsey postgame Wednesday that Merc’s mom had taken and sent him. Sighing he unlocked his phone and opened his text thread with Kelsey.
Taylor: Thanks Kels.
Taylor: Are you okay?
It wasn’t a question he was actually expecting her to answer but he had to ask. Especially right away because he was sure she was asleep.
Taylor wasn’t sure how long he scrolled through various social media platforms, sighing every time something made him think of Kelsey, before his eyes finally drifted shut causing him to doze lightly.
Having not really slept, Taylor couldn’t help but groan a little while his mom declared that she was dragging him out shopping after breakfast, insisting that they needed to make sure that he had clothes that fit.
After shopping, they met up with his dad for lunch and then went to see a movie before having some extended family over for a birthday potluck dinner. By the time everyone left, Taylor felt very loved but also was a little bit exhausted. Yet with all the uncertainties on his mind, Taylor found sleep evading him until the early hours of the morning when his body finally gave in.
Waking just a few hours later, the second straight morning with no replies from his girlfriend, Taylor had had enough.
Taylor: Do you even want this…me anymore?
He wasn’t sure what to expect anymore so when her reply came less than ten minutes later he was actually a little surprised.
Kelsey: Feels like you’re the one that doesn’t want this.
Clicking on her contact, Taylor called her, each ring of the phone only making him more annoyed.
Taylor: Kelsey….answer the phone.
As soon as he sent the message Taylor was calling her back and though she answered the phone it was with silence.
“What did I do to make you think I don’t want this?” He asked.
"Because I can count the number of waking hours we've spent alone together since the snow day on one hand.”
Taylor racked his brain to think of the days since the snow day. There was the Maine trip and then his parents had been in town plus playoffs and yeah he guessed they really hadn’t spent much time together alone in the last two weeks. There might have been a few missed opportunities like inviting her over before the party or taking her into his room for a bit during the party but he’d basically done the best he could.
“And I know I’m being a little bit selfish.” Kelsey mumbled, her voice pure sadness. “Of course hockey is important and school is important. And of course you should spend time with your parents when they come to see you and you have every right to want to spend time with friends. And I’ve never once complained about any of those things. But I can’t help but feel like I’m last on the priority list lately if I’m even on there at all.”
Taylor could hear her starting to cry through the phone and his heart shattered.
“And I can’t blame you for wanting to go home for break, I really can’t, but I was so looking forward to the thought of spending your birthday with you. Of…assuming you remembered to go get tested even though I haven’t seen results…surprising you with being comfortable forgoing protection for oral and taking that next step since we’ve been exclusive for awhile.”
Her words knocked the wind out of him and Taylor cursed under his breath.
“Kels…I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be.” Kelsey whispered. “Like I said, I’m being selfish. This is more a me problem than a you problem. And I didn’t want to explode on you like this, which is why I was distant. So I’m gonna go before I ruin your trip home more.”
“Kels, don’t. Don’t hang up.” Taylor pleaded.
“Taylor, enjoy your trip home. I’ll see you when you get back.” Kelsey insisted. “And I do love you even if I’m hurting. Don’t doubt that.”
Before Taylor could say anything else the call had dropped and he stared at his phone, body in shock. Kelsey’s words ran through his head on repeat leaving a deeper and deeper sinking feeling inside of him each time. He wasn’t going to be able to get the sound of her crying out of his head anytime soon.
Fuck. He’d fucked up so bad even if Kelsey insisted on bearing the blame. And to make things worse he didn’t know how to fix it.
After about twenty minutes trying to figure out how the fuck to fix it, Taylor wandered out of his room in search of his mom, wrapping his arms around her and burying his head into her neck when he found her.
“I fucked up mom.” He mumbled, his voice shaky.
Rubbing his back, Laura guided him to go sit down and instructed him to start from the beginning. After Taylor spilled his guts, recounting exactly what Kelsey had said to him, Laura hugged him softly.
“Have you heard of love languages Taylor?” She questioned, only to receive a shake of her son’s head. “Love languages are ways we prefer to receive and to give love. And there are five ways: Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service, Quality Time, and Physical Touch.” As she listed them she could see Taylor’s ears perk up.
“I’d bet you could probably guess yours without even thinking about it for more than a second, right?” She asked and Taylor nodded.
“Physical touch. Kelsey calls me her koala.” Taylor mumbled.
“So since the snow day has your love language been met?” Laura prompted.
“I mean yeah….” Taylor replied. “We cuddled when I got back from Maine, hand on thigh at dinner with you guys, the hug and kiss and car snuggles and sleeping beside her after the game, her sitting on my lap at the party.”
“So to you nothing was wrong.” Laura confirmed. “Based on everything Kelsey just told you, does her love language also seem like physical touch?” Immediately, Taylor shook his head.
“No. Hers is quality time.” Taylor admitted. “And I didn’t meet her love language at all mom.” Sighing, Taylor rubbed his face. “But how do I meet her love language when sometimes quality time isn’t possible like when I’m on the road?”
“We don’t have just one love language Tay. It’s not that one applies and none of the others do. It’s more that it’s a ranking. You have a primary love language, it fills your needs fastest. But you also have a secondary love language or combination of other love languages that will meet that need but not as strongly or quickly.” Laura paused to breathe. “Because I’d like to think that as your mom I know you, I’d say that acts of service and words of affirmation are secondary for you and gifts and quality time are at the bottom. So you need to figure out what Kelsey’s secondary love language or combination of love languages are and when quality time isn’t possible, focus on meeting the others. To me it sounds like physical touch is at the bottom of Kelsey’s rankings, it just doesn’t meet her needs at all. But maybe words of affirmation, gifts, or acts of service would in some shape or form.”
“She does like when I clean her car off from snow.” Taylor admitted. “And I honestly didn’t expect her to wear the hat with my number on it when I gave it to her but she’s worn it at every game since. And I doubt I’ll ever see the hoodie I gave her in my closet again.”
Quiet for a minute, Taylor sighed.
“I guess I haven’t met any of those other love languages since the snow day either.” A small pout formed on his face. “No wonder she doesn’t feel like she’s a priority to me and is wondering whether I want her. She’s so much better at this than I am mom.”
“It sounds like she’s familiar with love languages Taylor, and figured yours out a while ago.”
Taylor thought of how she always was willing to let him touch her or snuggle, how she would mend his clothes, make him things, and the notes she wrote him for Valentine's day and his birthday in addition to constantly telling him she was proud of him. She was regularly hitting basically every love language in addition to physical touch to make sure that all of his needs were met.
And yet he couldn’t meet a single one of hers.
“We both know that you know how to meet every single one of those Taylor. It’s just something that requires a little bit of effort and intentional focus. Relationships aren’t easy Tay. But if you love someone the way I think you love Kelsey, putting in the effort is worth it.” Laura murmured. “Now let me make you some breakfast because you need to eat something.”
While his mom made breakfast, Taylor moved to wash his face and then returned to his room for his phone.
Taylor: My mom taught me about love languages and it all makes so much more sense now. I promise I’m going to be better about meeting your needs moving forward.
Taylor: If you want to talk we can, and if you want to wait until I’m back then I guess that’s okay too.
****
Kelsey hadn’t replied back and Taylor tried not to let it bother him knowing that she was working on some things herself. Instead he worked on a project of his own making sure it was perfect. It was only when he received the notice that it was ready that he texted her again.
Taylor: If you’re out and about today you should stop by 100 Charlton Rd, Sturbridge, MA 01566, there’s something there for you.
Kelsey: What are you up to?
This time it was Taylor that didn’t respond and after finishing her current errand, Kelsey headed to that address to find herself at walmart.
Kelsey: Why am I at Walmart?
Taylor: [attaches photo center order information]
Confused, Kelsey climbed out of her car, locking it, and headed inside, straight back to the photo center.
“My boyfriend sent me to pick up an order I think.” She declared to the attendant showing them the confirmation number. After just a minute she was handed a shopping bag and told that she was all set and it was already paid for online.
Heading back to her car, Kelsey opened the bag to reveal a photobook. On the front cover was their kiss in the car on Valentine’s day and Kelsey had to swallow a lump in her throat. Opening the front cover there was a picture of a qr code attached with photo corners and when she used her phone’s camera over it, it directed her to a spotify playlist.
With her phone connected to her car’s speakers immediately a song started playing and Kelsey quickly recognized Kane Brown’s voice.
I’m just scared of losing you.
Kelsey instantly knew that Taylor was bearing his heart to her in the best way he knew how…through music.
Flipping through the book Kelsey saw the pictures from valentine’s day as she expected, but she was amazed by how many other photos there were. She didn’t realize any of these photos existed. A picture of her sleeping on his chest while he looked at her with the fondest eyes, one of their linked hands in her car while she drove, a couple from the night they’d gone bowling with his roommates, even one that judging by her outfit was from postgame Wednesday night as they just held each other in the bowels of Conte Forum. There was a picture of the fireplace and singer at the restaurant in Deerfield before Christmas, one of the band they saw play in Northampton, one of her just sitting at his desk doing homework and another of her on his floor meditating. He’d even taken one of her making eggs in his apartment kitchen on their snow day.
How had she never known that all of these moments had been captured?
Tucked at the very back was a picture that made the tears pooling in her eyes finally fall. A picture of them in the parking lot at Mullins, with Taylor clearly in the middle of spinning her around after she’d told him she loves him too.
Above it was a photo of a piece of paper with 'All the love songs in the world couldn't encapsulate the ways I love you, Kelsey’ written in Taylor’s neat formal printing.
He didn’t have to do any of this. Really he didn’t.
But Kelsey couldn’t deny that she felt so very loved because he had.
